Four years go by faster than you think. One day you're a nervous freshman trying to find your classroom in One Main and the next you're picking up your cap and gown wondering where the time went.

Every year the Marilyn Davies College of Business Digital Communications Team hosts See Ya Later Gator, a free graduation photo event for our graduating Business students. This year we asked them to share a little bit of their story with us.

These are their words. We hope you love them as much as we do.

Priscilla Reyna

"I am a proud first-generation college graduate, a testament to perseverance and dedication. My journey began with my decision to enlist in the Army, driven by a deep sense of responsibility to support my brother and sister while pursuing my education. Enlisting was the only way I could provide for my family and work towards my dreams.

Life, however, brought unexpected challenges, and it took me 15 years to return to the path of higher education. Today, I am thrilled to say that I am graduating with my bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Houston Downtown. This achievement is a reflection of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to my goals.

Beyond my academic accomplishments, I am a devoted wife and a mother of three. This year is especially meaningful as my 18-year-old son graduates from high school, a proud moment for our family. My family is my greatest motivation, and their love and support have been instrumental in my journey.

I thank God for this opportunity, for His strength, guidance, and blessings that have carried me through every obstacle. I am grateful for the lessons learned, the love shared, and the future that I am proud of how far I've come and excited for the future we are building for our family. We are trusting in His plan for us."

Phuc Thong (Timmy) Nguyen

Timmy's path to graduation was anything but easy. After being laid off from his career as an IT business analyst, he faced financial hardship, independence from family, and an uncertain future. Rather than give up, he made a bold decision to return to school, change his major to accounting, and bet on himself.

Encouraged by his wife, a seasoned CPA, Timmy found his footing in a new field and never looked back. A Ted Bauer Scholar maintaining a 4.0 GPA, he joined student organizations, landed an internship with Mauldin & Jenkins, and earned a full-time offer upon graduation. He also became a tutor at UHD's tutoring center and plans to keep giving back even after he walks across the stage.

"My parents were born in small communities where education was not considered a priority. However, they chose a different path for me. They sacrificed everything to bring me to this country so I could have better opportunities. Here, I met my husband, who paid for my first three semesters of college and always reminded me of my dreams. Together, we have a 6-year-old son who is my greatest inspiration. I want him to know that nothing is impossible. If I could do it, then he can too. I also have one brother in particular who always encouraged me to think about college and university. Unfortunately, he was not able to pursue that goal himself, but he always believed that I could achieve it."

"My journey to the University of Houston-Downtown hasn't been traditional, but it's been powerful. As a first-generation college student and a transfer from an HBCU, I've had to navigate spaces that weren't always designed with me in mind. There were moments of uncertainty, times I questioned if I truly belonged, and challenges that tested my resilience. But through it all, I kept going.

Coming to UHD, I made a decision: I wasn't just going to attend, I was going to make an impact. I got involved, stepped into leadership roles, and found my voice. Today, I serve as a Marketing Director, using my creativity and passion to help organizations grow and connect with others. Seeing myself on a billboard on campus is more than just a moment, it's a reminder that hard work, consistency, and belief in yourself can open doors you never imagined.

Beyond titles and recognition, my journey is about growth. It's about learning how to lead, how to uplift others, and how to turn obstacles into opportunities. I've built meaningful relationships, created lasting memories, and developed skills that will carry me far beyond graduation.

My story is still being written, but one thing is certain: I didn't come this far just to come this far. I'm proud of where I started, grateful for where I am, and excited for where I'm going next."

"I am a first-gen student, daughter of immigrant parents, I am a mother of 6 who started college at the age of 37. My journey through community college and UHD became a family effort—my kids even stepped in as my math tutors, reminding me that it’s never too late to learn. As I grew, I found my place on campus getting myself involved in school clubs and by serving as a budget chair for student activities.
What once felt overwhelming has now become my purpose. Today, I help new students, family members, and people in my church community take their first steps into college/university. My lived experiences, have given me a passion to making the path easier for others who are just starting."

Nora Ortiz

Nora Ortiz came to UHD as a transfer student, a working mother, and a first-generation American with a dream her parents carried all the way from the Philippines. Balancing multiple jobs and family life, she never lost sight of her goal. That is to be the first in her family to earn a bachelor's degree. A proud Ted Bauer Scholar, Nora leads by example every day, showing her children that it's never too late to pursue an education. After graduation, she hopes to continue at UHD in the MBA Business Intelligence program.

"Back in Spring 2018, I started my studies at UHD. I later withdrew in Spring 2021 at the beginning of the pandemic. It wasn’t easy to jump back into things after a little over 3 years. I promised myself I would eventually come back and I’m glad I did. I might of not had a traditional path to graduation but I’m finishing what I started. I’m excited and proud to be a part of the graduating class of 2026."

"I graduated from San Jacinto back in 2018. I always knew I wanted to go to UHD but was always scared to take the leap. 6 years and a beautiful baby later I made a wonderful friend that encouraged me and made sure I didn’t make any excuses in applying and working towards my dreams. I became a student in 2024 and two years later will be graduating with my bachelor’s degree in finance!
The finish line is so close! Class of 2026!!"

"I’m a graduating senior at the University of Houston Downtown, completing my Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance this Spring 2026. My journey has taught me discipline, resilience, and the value of perseverance. Balancing work, school, and personal responsibilities hasn’t always been easy, but each challenge pushed me to grow academically and professionally.

I’m proud to be part of UHD’s Marilyn Davies College of Business, and I’m grateful for the professors, peers, and experiences that helped shape my path. As I step into the next chapter, I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned, continue growing, and contribute meaningfully to the finance and business world."

"MPAC graduate. Began at UHD in 2023 and in 3 calendar plus a sprint semester I’ve accomplished what felt like something that may never happen for me. I’ve not only found a home at UHD but a family and community of students, faculty and friends who push you to become the best you that you can be. Full steam ahead with no reservations but a quiet resolve that comes before every next big challenge."
