How UHD’s VITA Program Helps Communities Every Tax Season
How UHD’s VITA Program Helps Communities Every Tax Season
With tax season in full swing, the Marilyn Davies College of Business at the University of Houston–Downtown is offering free tax preparation services to the Houston community through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Each year, MDCOB trains students in tax preparation and provides free federal tax filing services to individuals and families across the Greater Houston area. The program is designed to support individuals earning $69,000 or less, as well as students, international individuals, older adults, people with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers—helping ensure equitable access to essential tax services.
For many households, the average cost of basic tax preparation can range anywhere from $300 to $400. VITA helps alleviate this financial burden by offering the same high-quality, IRS-certified tax services at no cost, allowing community members to keep more of their hard-earned income.
Under the leadership of Dr. Shroff a CPA with about three decades of tax filing experience, the Marilyn Davies college of business provides free tax filing in partnership with the IRS.
Beyond its community impact, the VITA program also provides meaningful, hands-on experience for MDCOB students. Student volunteers receive IRS certification and apply their classroom knowledge in real-world settings, gaining valuable professional skills while serving the community.
