The University of Houston-Downtown's Department of Urban Education currently offers two Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs. The MAT Curriculum & Instruction is designed for students that currently hold a teaching certificate and want to pursue a master's degree. The MAT Texas Teacher Certification are for students who want to become teachers and do not currently hold a Texas initial teacher certification. The courses in these degree plans are taught using a hybrid of face-to-face and online instruction.

We also have a new Master of Educational Leadership. Learn more online.

The courses in these degree plans are taught using a hybrid of face-to-face and online instruction.

Our emphasis on urban teaching makes these graduate degrees unique. In order to meet the special needs of all children in urban classrooms, students completing their MAT degree will demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  • Characteristics and needs of learners in multicultural settings
  • Effective teaching practices that enhance student achievement for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or language spoken
  • Factors related to the development of effective teaching environments in urban classrooms
  • Classroom-based research methodology to support best instructional practices
  • Enriched understanding of academic content areas of language arts, social studies, the natural sciences, teaching English as a second language and educational technology

All UHD MAT students, including newly admitted students,  are encouraged to apply for the Gordon and Mary Cain Graduate Academic Merit Scholarship. This scholarship will pay for half the price of UHD MAT tuition/fees for one semester. However, students can earn this scholarship more than once during the course of their MAT program. Apply here: Cain Graduate Scholarship.

For more information, including course scheduling, transfer credit, minimum academic requirements, and graduation, please see the graduate handbook.
