Joseph and Joyce DeMarino Endowed Scholarship
The Joseph and Joyce DeMarino Endowed Scholarship supports students in the University of Houston-Downtown's College of Public Service who are pursuing a major in Urban Education. It provides financial assistance to help cover costs for those facing an unpaid student teaching semester or other required unpaid internship essential for degree completion. This scholarship honors the donors' parents and aims to enable dedicated future educators to successfully complete their programs and enter the teaching profession.
Awards will be made in the amount of $500.00 per student for up to two (2) students in the teacher education program. The award will be posted for student use in the fall semester following the award.
When an award is made to a student the funds will be placed in an account specifically for that student at the University of Houston – Downtown Bookstore. A recipient of this scholarship will have one academic year in which to spend his or her award.
Requirements for receiving the scholarship:
- Students who have been officially admitted to the program.
- Students who have a minimum 2.7 GPA
- Students who have demonstrated a high degree of professionalism and a commitment to teaching in urban schools or to the field of criminal justice
Letter of application will include the statement and questions below:
Please submit a typed personal statement titled “Joseph and Joyce DeMarino Endowed Scholarship”. The statement should be 500 words in length and include:
- Why do you want to be a teacher?
- What is your teaching philosophy?
- How will you support all learners in your classroom?
- Other personal information which you would like to share
Scholarship applications are due on on the fourth Friday in March for students in the Department of Urban Education. Scholarship applications for Joseph and Joyce DeMarion Endowed Scholarship should be emailed to Dr. Amelia Hewitt (hewitta@uhd.edu).
Urban Education scholarship applications will be reviewed by the UE Awards Committee in the Department of Urban Education.
