External Study Abroad Scholarships

The US department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or inter abroad.

Award

• Up to $5000

Eligibility:

• Must be a US citizen
• An undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the US.
• Receiving a Federal Pell grant during the time of application or provide proof that you will be receiving one during term of study abroad program or internship.
• In process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad program or internship program.

Application:

• Online application.
• Application for Spring and Summer semesters will open in mid-August and for the fall semester January.

Provides unique funding opportunities for US undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to US interests, and underrepresented in study abroad.

Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena.
In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Award:

• Maximum scholarship awards are:
• $8,000 for a summer program (STEM students only).
• $10,000 for a semester.
• $20,000 for 6-12months.

Eligibility:

• Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages and fields of critical study to US national security.
• Preference given to undergraduate applicants proposing at least 6 months overseas.

Application:

• The Boren Scholarships national application deadline is February.

The Fullbright UK Summer Institutes are 3-4 week programs for US undergraduate students.

Participants can explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university.

Award:

• The costs covered include: the return US-UK airfare.
• Tuition and fees at the host institution.
• Accommodation.
• In some cases, a small daily allowance for meals.

Eligibility:

• Be a US citizen and possess a US passport.
• Have had little or no study/travel outside of the US or North America.
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.7.
• Be at least 18 years old by the start of the program.
• Be able to participate in the program in its entirety.
• Have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the institute finishes.
• Applications open in November.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs.

• During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences

Eligibility:

• Must be citizens or nationals of the USA at time of application. Permanent residents not eligible.
• Applications must have a conferred bachelor's degree or equivalent before the start of the grant.
• Applicants must be in good health.
• Must have sufficient proficiency in written and spoken language of host country.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.

Award:

• $1,000

Eligibility:

• Must meet ALL of the following:
• You are an undergraduate attending an institution with an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter.
• You have a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
• Your study abroad program begins between May 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020.
• You have applied to or been accepted into an accredited study abroad program before the session deadline and provide a letter of acceptance.

Application:

• Application through online portal.
• Supplemental materials: copy of transcripts; 2 recommendation letters; acceptance letter into an accredited study abroad program.

Award:

• $4000

Eligibility:

• Must be a US citizen.
• Be enrolled as an undergraduate in a US 4-year college or university.
• Have at least 30 hours of completed undergraduate credit by the time of the study abroad term's start date.
• Intend to study abroad in a program that is outside the US.
• Be enrolling in a study abroad term that is no shorter than 14 weeks.
• Be applying for either the Fall or Spring semester. Summer applicants will not be. considered unless their academic term abroad is longer than 14 weeks.
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at their current institution.
• To apply for the Spring, the scholarship opens in September.

Award:

• 1^st place $750

Eligibility:

• Open to all US students currently enrolled in a study abroad program in an institute of higher education

Recipients receive award to help finance their international trip that includes an educational or service component.

Award:

• $2,000
• Split into two payments. $1,000 prior to departure, and remaining $1,000 after return

Eligibility:

• Must be 18-30 years or age at time of application
• Be a US citizen or permanent resident
• Demonstrate financial need by meeting at least one of the following criteria:
• Current Pell Grant recipient
• 2018 income level that does not exceed 300% of the 2018 Federal Poverty Guideline
• Reside or attend school in one of the select metropolitan areas where HI USA has a community presence (see website for details)
• Plan to take a trip to a destination outside of the 50 United States between May, and August that incorporates education, volunteerism or service learning

FEA invests in promising students with financial need who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet eligibility requirements may participate on any international education program that meets their academic objectives.

Award:

• Scholarships range from $1,250 - $10,000
• Up to $10,000 for students who plan to study abroad for a full academic year
• Up to $5,000 for students who plan to study abroad during the fall or spring semester
• Awards that are prorated by number of weeks in-country (with a minimum of $1250) for students studying abroad during summer

Eligibility:

• Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S (graduate students are not eligible)
• Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student's home institution
• Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in country/countries

Application:

• Online application form; unofficial transcript; financial aid form; recommendation letter
• Preferences given to: first-generation college students; minority students and community college students

Deadline:

• The spring application will open in July.

Internship and Volunteer Scholarships

Offers $500 scholarship for fall and spring semester. The program is created for current or recent students who will serve as Overseas Ambassadors to share their experience to motivate others members to go abroad.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Minimum cumulative 2.75 GPA

• Leader on campus and in your community
• Currently enrolled full time

A designed program to take people out of their comfort zone and into an environment where they are forced to communicate with other participants.

The Freeman-ASIA award is designed to support U.S based undergraduates who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses.

Award:

• Summer Award: up to $3000
• Semester/Quarter Award: up to $5000
• Academic Year Award: up to $7000

Eligibility:

• Applicants must be a U.S citizen or permanent resident at time of application.
• Must currently receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate a verifiable need for financial assistance to participate in study abroad program.
• Must be an undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 2.8, pursuing his or her first bachelor degree (or associates degree) at a two-year or four-year institution of higher education in the United States.
• Must have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad based program in: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Huaya Enrichment scholarship is awarded to students aged 18 or older to study Mandarin in Taiwan. Huaya Enrichment courses will include a summer term (June-July, or July-August) along with short term classes which may last 2,3,6,9 or 12 months.

Award:

• A monthly stipend of approximately $800

Eligibility:

• U.S applicants who possess a high school diploma or above, have shown excellent academic performance, and are of good moral character.

Application:

• Applicants must submit an application form; a photocopy of his/her passport or any other documents that can verify nationality; a photocopy of the certificate of the highest credential and transcript; a photocopy of the applications to the Mandarin language center; and other documents required by local embassies or missions.

Deadline:

• Application period runs from February through March, however period is subject to change. Applicants must submit all of the above documents to local embassies or missions before the deadline.

JAPAN

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to US undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Around 100 scholarships are awarded each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

Award:

• Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2500 (for students on semester-long programs)
• $4000 for students on academic year programs
• Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply

Eligibility:

• Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for Bridging scholarships
• Japanese language study is not a prerequisite
• Applicants must be US citizens and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the US before and during the time they are studying abroad
• Students' study in Japan must last for at least 3 months and must earn credit that will transfer to their home campus in the US

Deadline:

• Applications for Bridging Scholarships from students who will study abroad in Japan will close Oct.

The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to undergraduates or graduate students for a semester of year-long study abroad program in Japan.

Award:

• The scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the applicant's choice
• The scholarship program grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications

Eligibility:

• Are a U.S citizen
• Currently in good academic standing at an accredited college or university in the US
• Will be enrolled at a credit-bearing course of study at a college, university or approved academic center in the U.S in the upcoming academic year
• Demonstrates a financial need for international study
• Preference will be given to applicants who have been raised by a single parent or who have lost both parents

Application:

• All students must complete an online-application using the scholarship portal
• The following materials comprise the required materials that must be submitted in the application for the scholarship: application form; personal statement essay; resume; letter of recommendation; study abroad advisor certification letter (template provided); financial aid certification letter (template provided); and academic transcript (optional)

Deadline:

• Application deadline: February.
• Scholarship Acceptance deadline: June.
