Art Material Scholarships

2024

To be eligible for the following awards, students must be enrolled during the semester of their application and be in good academic and financial standing at the university. Students are encouraged to apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible, but are limited to one art award per semester. Additional restrictions are listed below each scholarship description. All award amounts are contingent upon funding.


Shipnes Scholarship

The O'Kane Gallery is the administrator of the Shipnes Scholarship, which was endowed by the Shipnes family in 1990. This award is restricted to expenses associated with credit bearing coursework at UHD, including tuition, books, fees, and/or supplies for the coming academic semester. The scholarship is available to current, full-time students. Please note the awardees must enroll in a least 3 semester credit hours during the year he/she/they receives a Shipnes scholarship.   To be considered for this award, applicants must:

  • have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the time of application
  • be a declared Fine Arts major
  • Submit a digital portfolio of 10 labeled images to artscholarship@uhd.edu OR submit a 500 word essay on the subject of your career interests in art with the application form.
  • Submit the application form including UHD Degree Progress Report (DPR).

Please note that awardees must enroll in at least 3 semester credit hours, including the above-mentioned studio courses, during the year he/she/they receives a Shipnes scholarship.​

Ellen and Jim Seigler Endowment

In 2010 the Ellen and Jim Seigler Endowment was established to support fine arts programs in the Arts and Humanities Department and the O’Kane Gallery. The Seigler Art Materials Fund award reimburses students, up to $700, for the cost of art supplies and materials, workshops or other forums for  student enrichment in fine arts. Successful applicants must demonstrate their excellence in studio art.

Applicants must:

  • have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher in all art classes and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better at the time of application.
  • Be currently enrolled in 9 or more credit hours, of which at least one course is a 3 credit hour art studio class.
  • Submit a link to a digital portfolio of at least 10 labeled works of art to artscholarship@uhd.edu.
  • Submit the application form along with a Degree Progress Report (DPR).

Please note that preference is given to awardees enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours for each semester he/she/they receives the award, but consideration will be given to students enrolled in at least 9 semester credit hours for each semester the student receives the award.

Trask Scholarship

Richard and Ann Trask established the Trask Scholarship Endowment Fund in 1998. This award may be used to cover expenses for art-related endeavors including tuition, books, workshop fees, supplies, books, and/or travel expenses for the coming academic semester. Preference will be given to incoming, degree-seeking students (0-54 college credit hours); continuing students may also be considered. The selection committee looks favorably upon applications that demonstrate the candidate’s promise in their pursuit of a career in Fine Arts.

To be considered for this award, applicants must:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in all art classes and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application.
  • Submit a link to a digital portfolio of 10 labeled images emailed to artsholarship@uhd.edu OR submission of a 500 word essay on the subject of your career interests in art with the application form.
  • Submission of the application form including a current Degree Progress Report (DPR).
  • Preference is given to incoming freshmen who are seeking a degree.

Please note that awardees must enroll in at least 12 semester credit hours for each semester that he/she/they receives the award.

Emphasis will be placed on selecting recipient(s) interested in pursuing a career in Fine Arts and to awardees enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours for each semester s/he receives the award, but consideration will be given to students enrolled in at least 9 semester credit hours for each semester he/she/they receives the award.
