Science of Teaching Reading
(TExES 293)
Engaged Online Learning with Optional Graduate Course Credit
This online course is designed to support pre-service and in-service teachers who are interested in the science of teaching reading (STR) and plan to take the TExES 293 certification exam, as required by the Texas Legislature’s House Bill 3.
Step One: Online Modules
The modules, called “Chapters,” address reading pedagogy, development, foundational
skills, comprehension, analysis, and response. Completing these chapters will help
you learn the 13 competencies upon which the exam is based. The chapters require approximately
one hour each, and they enable you to explore, explain, engage, extend, and evaluate
your learning.
Upon successful completion of the chapters, you will earn the
Certificate of Completion. You also have the opportunity to demonstrate your learning via a cumulative exam
to earn the
Certificate of Learning.
Step Two: Graduate-Level Course
Earning the
Certificate of Learning makes you eligible to apply to UHD as a post-baccalaureate student* and enhance your
experience with classroom-based coursework for graduate credit. Alternative certification
candidates are welcome.
