About the Conference

The Department of History, Humanities, and Languages (HHL) of the University of Houston-Downtown invites you to join the 8th Annual Student Research Conference. This conference features student presenters from UHD and other local universities and colleges whose research focuses on topics related to the disciplines taught in the department: history, philosophy, humanities, and foreign languages.​ ​

This conference will be in person this year on December 4, 2023 in the Academic building, special events room 300
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.​​​

Call for Papers​​​

Papers should be 8-10 pages in length (approximately 1500-1800 words and 15 minutes long when read aloud), they should have appropriate citations and bibliography, and they should present research on topics in:​

  • history
  • philosophy
  • humanities
  • cultural studies
  • film studies
  • foreign literatures
  • foreign cultures

Papers may be written in English or Spanish.

Alternatively, presenters may choose to create a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation (however, these must be accompanied by a finished essay if the presenter wants to participate in the best paper contest). Each panel of presentations will be followed by a 10-minute question and answer period.

Students whose presentations are of exceptional quality and who offer strong original research will receive special recognition and a gift card award. Students will be informed if their papers have been accepted for the conference by Nov. 18
