Dr. Deborah E. Bordelon
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost

Biography

Dr. Bordelon began her career in 1998 as Chair and Associate Professor at Xavier University of Louisiana. She later served as Dean of the College of Education at Nicholls State University and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Governors State University. In 2018, she assumed the role of Provost and Executive Vice President at Columbus State University before joining UHD in June 2022.

She holds a doctorate in special education, a master’s degree in education, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, all from the University of New Orleans.

Throughout her career, Dr. Bordelon has been dedicated to advancing higher education through leadership, teaching, and research. She has contributed significantly to the field of special education and educational leadership, focusing on innovative teaching methodologies and fostering inclusive learning environments.

What is the Provost Role?

  • Chief Academic Officer: The Provost is responsible for overseeing all academic programs, policies, and initiatives at University of Houston-Downtown.
  • Institutional Leadership: As a key member of the university’s leadership team, the Provost plays a pivotal role in strategic decision-making and planning.
  • Academic Policy Development: The Provost sets and implements policies related to faculty appointments, curriculum development, and academic standards.
  • External Representation: Represents UHD with external stakeholders including the University of Houston System Board of Regents and state educational bodies.
  • Community Engagement: Engages with the broader community to enhance partnerships and support the university's mission and goals.

The Provost also serves as the acting president in the absence of the university president, overseeing daily operations and ensuring continuity of leadership.
