Thanks to funding from UHD's Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, members of the History faculty developed a more harmonized curriculum to better leverage the student support services provided through Supplemental Instruction. The participants in th this project recognized the importance that all students had access to the textbook on day one of classes; after reviewing options, the faculty selected OpenStax' U.S. History. Out-of-copyright primary source material are also used for the signature assignment. These documents are curated and updated by the faculty on an annual basis.

In a typical fall semester, as many as 15 sections are taught to approximately 650 students. By adopting OER, the faculty has saved students an enormous sum of money while ensuring that every student has access to the text on the first day of classes.
