About UHD's President

Deborah E. Bordelon began her appointment as Interim President of the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) on May 1, 2026. Prior to assuming the interim presidency, she served as UHD’s Chief Academic Officer and Provost for four years. In that capacity, she strengthened the University’s reputation and prominence, advanced student success outcomes, expanded academic offerings, and deepened community engagement.

A trusted higher education executive and exemplary leader, Dr. Bordelon is the immediate past president of the Texas Council for Chief Academic Officers, where she previously served as secretary, treasurer, and vice president. She currently serves on the boards of both Houston GPS and Central Houston, Inc.

Her past leadership roles include serving as Provost and Executive Vice President at Columbus State University and as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Governors State University. She has also held positions as academic dean, division chair, and faculty member at public and private institutions in Illinois and Louisiana.

Dr. Bordelon earned her doctoral degree in Special Education, her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of New Orleans.

Throughout her career, Dr. Bordelon has advanced higher education excellence and access through leadership, teaching, and research. She has also contributed significantly to the field of special education and educational leadership, focusing on innovative teaching methodologies and fostering inclusive learning environments. As a first-generation college graduate who completed three academic degrees while employed, Dr. Bordelon’s deep understanding of and connection to students are grounded in her own tenacity, determination, and lived experience.
