Newman Civic Fellowship
The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program that recognizes and supports student public problem solvers at UHD in partnership with Campus Compact.
Fellows are nominated by the UHD president based on their potential for public leadership and their work with communities. Throughout the fellowship year, Campus Compact and CCESL provide students with opportunities to nurture their assets and help them develop strategies for social change—creating a network of connected and engaged student leaders who can support one another in making positive change.

How to Become a Newman Civic Fellow
To become a Newman Civic Fellow you must be nominated by a professor. If you wish to self nominate, you must first find a professor to submit your nomination on your behalf. Only one Newman Fellow is chosen for UHD each year.
The nomination to fellow timeline is as follows:
- October — UHD Internal Nomination call goes out via email invitations
- December — Nominations reviewed and finalist chosen
- March — Formal nomination submitted to Campus Compact
- August - New Fellows publicly announced
- September to May (of following year) - Fellowship duration
Please note that if you are nominated this year, the fellowship will fall on the following academic year. So please only nominate those who will still be enrolled in classes at UHD for a minimum of 2 years.
If you would like to reach out to prepare for a Newman Civic Fellow nomination or want to be sure to be included on the email invitation, please reach out to ccesl@uhd.edu.
