UHD Honors Program Requirements

UHD Honors Program

The UHD Honors Program outlines specific criteria that students must meet to participate. This webpage provides detailed information on the academic and eligibility requirements for joining the Honors Program at the University of Houston-Downtown.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

The UHD Honors Program has an academic and a service component. On the academic side, you will take special sections of lower-level core courses which are limited to Honors students. These feature small enrollments and great teachers who focus on encouraging your critical thinking, research and communication skills. For upper-level courses, students work with a chosen professor each semester to complete a project called an Honors Contract. On average, students take 1-2 honors courses per semester.

Each Honors student also completes 30 volunteer hours per academic year. You can fulfill this requirement by working with your fellow team members (every honors student is a member of one of four teams). The teams also participates in fun challenges and games throughout the year.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

UHD Honors Program students come from a variety of backgrounds. These include:

  • Students entering college for the first time
  • Transfer students form other honors programs at institutions like San Jacinto CC, Houston CC, and Lone Star CC
  • Students with no honors experience and fewer than 36 hours coming to UHD from other universities or community colleges
  • UHD students (mid-year freshmen or rising sophomores) with fewer than 36 hours
ANNUAL SERVICE REQUIREMENT

All students in the University Honors Program are required to complete and provide documentation of at least 30 hours of service to UHD and/or any legally recognized nonprofit institution or organization.

Service hour documentation must include the name of the nonprofit, exact dates of service, a record of time volunteered, volunteer supervisor signature, and contact information. To make this fun, we will have a Volunteer-hour check-up for all students right before spring break to help those who need assistance with accumulating service hours.
