This signature family-friendly event brings together faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners for an afternoon of great food, live music, and spirited competition on UHD’s picturesque South Deck, which overlooks Downtown Houston.

Bring your appetite and taste-test some of the best chili recipes around. Whether you're a spice enthusiast or prefer a milder flavor, there's something for everyone at this flavorful event. Don't miss the chance to vote for your favorite chili and see who will be crowned the UHD Chili Champion!

Day-Of Procedures

  • Please print out your ticket and present it at the Hospitality Tent. There you will receive a punch card that enables you to sample the teams' chili.
  • The event is open to all UHD staff, students, faculty, alumni, and general guests.
  • Complimentary beer for those over 21 years of age will be provided by Saint Arnold Brewing Company beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a limit of two beers per guest.
  • Those who consume beer and wine must obtain a wristband from the Chili Cook-Off Hospitality Tent.
  • Alcohol must be consumed within the specified event grounds.
  • Children under 12 years of age attend for free.

Basic Needs Discount

Guests who anticipate donating a basic needs item can receive a $5 discount by using the discount code UHDGIVES at checkout. If you forget to bring your basic needs item on the day of the event, you will be required to pay the outstanding $5 at the Hospitality Tent.

Qualifying basic needs items consist of laundry detergent, dryer sheets, trash bags, multi-surface cleaner or disinfectant wipes, paper towels, dish soap, sponges, and any other general cleaning supplies. Personal hygiene products including but not limited to deodorant, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes, and toilet paper are also welcome.

UHD Employee Guidelines

On April 10, employees not participating on a team may attend the Chili Cook-off beginning at 4:00 p.m., provided there is at least one person on duty in each department until 5:00 p.m. to accept calls, receive visitors, or transact business, as required by state law.

In addition, since this is a university sponsored event, alcohol may not be consumed before 5:00 p.m. If employees choose to drink alcohol before 5:00 p.m., they must take accrued paid leave (vacation or compensatory time).
