Zero Waste Event Commitment
We are proud to announce the UHD Chili Cook-Off is a Zero Waste Event.
We are working to divert 90% of the event waste stream away from landfill through composting and recycling efforts. Your team’s participation is essential to helping us reach this goal.
Zero Waste Station at Your Tent
Each team will be provided with three color-coordinated waste bins at their tent:
🟢 GREEN – COMPOST
🔵 BLUE – RECYCLING
⚫ BLACK – LANDFILL (LAST RESORT)
- All food scraps
- Leftover chili
- Vegetable trimmings
- Compostable cups, bowls, and utensils
- Napkins and paper towels
- Aluminum beer cans
- Plastic bottles
- Tin food trays
- Plastic bags
- Styrofoam
- Latex gloves
- Plastic wrap
- Chip bags
- Candy wrappers
Event Support
Porters will periodically collect full bags from your tent. UHD student volunteers will sort and weigh materials to track diversion rates. Zero Waste guidelines will be posted at each tent to assist you. If unsure, ask a Zero Waste Ambassador.
Purchasing Sustainable Supplies
Recommended Best Practices
Teams are strongly encouraged to reduce waste at the source when purchasing ingredients and supplies. Consider the following:
- When ordering meat, ask your butcher to wrap items in butcher paper instead of Styrofoam trays and plastic wrap.
- Use reusable containers for prep and transport.
