Elder abuse is a hidden crisis that takes many forms—physical, emotional, psychological, and financial—leaving lasting harm on some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. Despite its profound impact, elder abuse often goes unrecognized, underreported, and unaddressed.
Addressing this urgent issue demands a coordinated, multidisciplinary response. First responders, healthcare providers, social workers, legal and financial professionals, long-term care facilities, senior living communities, and mental health specialists all play critical roles in prevention, intervention, and support.
Through greater awareness, early detection, and collaborative protection strategies, we can better safeguard older adults and offer meaningful support to those affected. No single agency or system can tackle this alone—it requires shared responsibility and strong partnerships across sectors.
Please join us on Friday, June 20th for the 16th Annual Elder Abuse Awareness Conference, hosted by the Region VI Adult Protective Services Advisory Board in partnership with the University of Houston-Downtown’s Service, Teaching, Aging, and Research (S.T.A.R.) Lab. This full-day event will address key issues surrounding elder abuse and highlight ways we can work together to create a safer, more compassionate future for our older adults.
A wide variety of sessions will cover topics such as:
- Social Isolation
- Self Care/Neglect
- Exploitation
- Medical Fraud
- Elder Abuse
- Depression
- Social Security
- Long Term Care
- Nutrition
