Building an Inclusive Learning Community via Collaborative Annotation Microcredential

Collaborative annotation is a learning activity that promotes student engagement with classmates, the instructor, and instructional materials. By implementing the Perusall app, a collaborative annotation tool available in Canvas, instructors can build an inclusive learning community through active learning and providing access to high-quality, cost-free materials.

Implementing Inclusivity with Open Educational Resources using Perusall

In this workshop, we will focus on sourcing and implementing Open Educational Resources (OER) through Perusall in online asynchronous courses. We will discuss how utilizing the Perusall app in Canvas to provide cost-free materials promotes two key elements of inclusive pedagogy: access and engagement. Faculty will learn how to easily source and implement Open Educational Resources using Perusall. The workshop will provide an overview of useful nationwide resources that support OER use. It will also explain the process of adopting an OER text in Perusall.

Perusall Training and Implementation in Canvas (TTLC)
September 19, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

This introductory training session hosted by the TTTLC will discuss how to get started with using Perusall in your Canvas course. When using Perusall, students annotate the readings and asynchronously respond to each other's comments and questions about the readings in context.

Topics covered include:

  • Configuring a Persuall course to sync with Canvas
  • Building a course library
  • Basic assignment creation

Prioritizing Wellness - Strategies for Preventing Burnout
October 24, 2024 from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The demands of teaching at the university level in the ever-changing landscape of higher education, we as educators often experience overwhelm and burnout. This workshop will work to provide educators with tools to prioritize the demands of teaching in a way that it enhances student learning while at the same time valuing the boundaries of the professor. Outcomes will include practical strategies for course design, incorporation of new technologies, and streamlining assessment.

Best Practices for Engaging Students and Incorporating Critical Thinking in Workshop

Promoting Inclusivity through Collaborative Annotation This workshop will offer an overview of how to incorporate collaborative annotation into course assignments using Perusall to promote close reading, critical thinking, active engagement and an inclusive environment for online, hybrid, and face to face classes.

Earn completion badges through the UHD Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) for each workshop by submitting a brief survey/reflection after attending. If you earn all three badges in the series, you will earn the Collaborative Annotation microcredential as part of the UHD Teaching Certificate program run by the CTLE. Completion of three microcredentials in the CTLE series leads to the final certificate, which triggers a $500 stipend.
