UHD Finance alum Genesis Loera (’12) joins the panel for “Banking on Success: UHD Alumni Share Financial Career Advice” at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in room B200 of the Shea Street Building (Marilyn Daves College of Business). More at “Considering a Career in Banking or Finance? This President’s Lecture Is for You.”
Loera spends much of her time counseling small business owners and other professionals on matters pertaining to personal and business finances. It’s a dream job for this dedicated Latina financial advisor who loves working with both people and numbers.
The first in her family to graduate from college, Loera worked hard to completely self-fund her education. She was driven to set a high standard through her accomplishments, not only because her younger siblings view her as a role model, but also out of respect for her parents who sacrificed to provide for their children. In 2012, she graduated from UHD with a degree in Finance, started building her financial practice, and obtained her CFP® from Rice University.
“Knowing that people are making room in their lives for me to meet with them today so that I can help them do the work that will have meaning years down the road is the reason I love this career,” says Loera. Having grown up in a family that had little access to financial guidance, she recognizes the value of financial literacy. She urges her clients to plan ahead to avoid many of the financial mistakes she witnessed firsthand. Loera is proud that her work can impact families for generations to come.
Loera is also proud of her success in business. As an entrepreneur, she particularly enjoys working with other business owners. She obtained the Certified Family Business Specialist designation through the American College and has developed a niche in working with Hispanic businesses. A native Houstonian, Loera speaks Spanish fluently and appreciates the opportunity to put her skills to use in a community she innately understands. “I work extensively with people who are chasing the American Dream, just like me,” she explains.
She continues to make a difference in her community outside of work by actively networking via the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Alpha, and the Emerging Leaders Institute. She is a mentor at the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Houston and an officer for Beta Gamma Sigma, a “best in business” honor society restricted to top graduates from the highest-ranked business schools in America.
