A safe, healthy academic community is essential for maintaining an environment conducive to learning, research, and personal growth. The Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and the U.S. Department of Education implemented regulations that require institutions of higher education to adopt and implement comprehensive programs that prevent substance misuse among students and employees.
The University of Houston-Downtown's Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program (DAAPP) supports this mandate by providing a framework for education, prevention, early intervention, and access to support services. Through evidence-based intervention and access to confidential support services, we aim to empower individuals to make informed decisions and seek help when needed.
Members of the UHD community share responsibility for upholding these standards. This includes understanding applicable laws and university policies, recognizing the signs of substance misuse, and taking appropriate action when concerns arise. The program also details the consequences of policy violations as well as available resources for treatment and counseling.
