Academic Standing

Your GPA is more than just a number. It is the university’s way of determining whether you are making satisfactory academic progress toward your degree.

Graduation Requirement

2.0

A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to graduate.

Good Academic Standing

2.0

A 2.0 cumulative GPA keeps you in good academic standing.

What Is Considered Good Academic Standing?

At UHD, students are considered to be in good academic standing when their cumulative UHD GPA is 2.0 or higher.

But here’s the reality: many students experience academic challenges at some point and their academic standing may change. That does not mean you cannot recover.

At UHD, academic standing processes exist to:

  • alert you early
  • connect you with supportive resources based on your needs
  • help you build a path forward

If your GPA falls below university standards, the College Academic Advising Centers and the Gator Success Program are here to support you.

If you think you may be at risk academically, reach out to your College Academic Advising Center early. Support works best when we partner with you sooner rather than later.

Understanding Your Academic Standing

Academic Warning is an early indication that your GPA is below the university standard.

It only applies to:

  • First-Time-In-College (FTIC) students
  • after their first long term, either fall or spring
  • with a cumulative GPA below 2.0

Important to know

  • You cannot be dismissed while on Academic Warning.
  • This status only happens once.

By raising your cumulative GPA to 2.0 or higher, you can return to good academic standing.

Unless you are a First-Time-In-College (FTIC) student completing your first long term, you are placed on Academic Probation when your cumulative UHD GPA falls below 2.0.

You are still able to enroll in courses while on academic probation.

“Academic probation” will be noted on your official undergraduate transcript.

Required Next Steps

  • Meet with an academic advisor before registering
  • Discuss an academic improvement plan
  • Use recommended support resources

How to Get Off Probation

  • Earn a term GPA of 2.0 or higher each semester
  • Raise your cumulative UHD GPA to 2.0 or higher

Continued Probation occurs when you are:

  • on probation
  • and your term GPA falls below 2.0

This is an escalated academic alert. Immediate improvement is required to remain enrolled.

If your term GPA is below 2.0 again while on continued probation, you will be suspended.

“Continued academic probation” will be noted on your official undergraduate transcript.

Suspension means you are not eligible to enroll at UHD for the next term.

What Happens

  • Your next-term courses will be administratively dropped by the Registrar’s Office.
  • You must sit out for the suspension term.
  • You may submit an appeal to the Director of Academic Advising of your major by showing clear and compelling evidence that you can succeed academically.

If the Appeal Is Approved

  • You return on Extended Probation.
  • You may be required to agree to a contract of actions likely to result in improved academic performance.
  • You must maintain a term GPA of 2.0 or above in each term you register for going forward.

Academic dismissal occurs if, while on extended probation, you again fail to earn a term GPA of 2.0.

Dismissal is permanent unless successfully appealed using clear and compelling evidence of potential academic success, such as academic success at other institutions.

Appeals are reviewed by the Academic Dismissal Committee.

Students who are readmitted after dismissal will have a pre-declared major.

In order to declare your major, you must earn a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Support Resources

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

To return to good academic standing, you must raise your cumulative UHD GPA to 2.0 or higher.

Students on probation must also earn a term GPA of at least 2.0 each semester while working toward improving their cumulative GPA.

Meeting with your academic advisor and using support services can help you develop a plan to improve your academic performance.

The Gator Success Program (GSP) is a support program designed to help students who are experiencing academic difficulty improve their academic progress.

Through GSP, students work closely with advisors and success coaches, connect with campus resources, and complete structured steps that help them build stronger academic habits and raise their GPA.

Some students on academic probation may still qualify for financial aid, while others may need to meet additional Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements to receive any aid. For questions about your financial aid status, contact the UHD Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid.

Your academic standing is updated at the end of each semester and can be viewed in your myUHD  Student Center - Academics page.

If you are unsure about your status, your academic advisor can help you review your academic standing and next steps.

You can view your cumulative and semester GPA by logging into your myUHD Student Center - Academic Center page and reviewing your academic records.

Your academic advisor can also help you understand how your GPA affects your academic standing and progress toward graduation.

Yes. However, you will typically be required to meet with your academic advisor before registering to review your academic progress, develop a plan to improve your GPA, and to have your probation hold removed.
