On Saturday, April 18, 2026, hundreds of high school seniors and their families gathered at UHD to celebrate their college choice for the fall: the University of Houston-Downtown.

“We were excited to welcome all the students and their families to our very first Gator Commitment Day,” said UHD Vice President for Enrollment Management Long V. Huynh, DBA. “They didn’t just choose a college—they chose a future. Surrounded by new faces while sharing the excitement and a sense of belonging, they were stepping into a community that will shape who they become, united by a single decision to call UHD home.”

Hosted by UHD’s Division of Enrollment Management, the inaugural event welcomed both freshmen and transfer students with a simple promise: “no seminars, no orientation—just pure fun.” And that’s what UHD’s newest Gators experienced: face-painting, caricature drawings, and food, plus unique swag like personalized license plates and Gator yard signs and pennants.

Students embraced UHD’s culture and newest tradition by touching the Gator statue on the South Deck as a symbol of a successful year and signed their class banner, which will be proudly displayed on campus.

“Gator Commitment Day gave our incoming students an opportunity to begin finding their community, connect with future classmates, and experience the excitement of becoming part of the UHD family,” added Elizabeth Villegas, Ph.D., Assistant Vice President, Enrollment Services.
