This article is the first in a series about UHD’s student-centered professional organizations, ranging from smaller groups founded on campus to collegiate chapters of national organizations. Across all four academic colleges, these organizations offer students opportunities for professional development, community service, advocacy, academic enrichment, and more.

In AMA UHD, Gators engage with the U.S.’s largest marketing organization, the American Marketing Association (AMA). The student chapter, which maintains an official charter with AMA’s collegiate division, “seeks to expand the experience and marketing knowledge of its members,” said Dr. Lucille Pointer, who alongside Drs. Michael Pettiette and Scott Davis, advises the group.

AMA UHD keeps busy: Monthly meetings feature field specialists as guest speakers, connecting students with some of Houston’s top companies and helping them land internships. Members have also secured prestigious scholarships and awards, including three of the 14 scholarships awarded by the Advertising Education Foundation of Houston—the most of any school. AMA UHD was also one of the top three teams at the Student Advertising Competition, the American Advertising Federation of Houston’s intercollegiate advertising competition.

Chapter President Angie Monterroso attests to the organization’s ability to hone professional skills and launch careers, saying that the dedication of its members does not go unnoticed. She remains inspired by the organization’s reach and commitment to community service: “AMA represents growth, connection, and impact—being part of that journey for so many students is what makes it so meaningful to me.”
