Marketing sophomore Kemberley Osorto hit the ground running immediately after transferring to UHD from Lone Star College, thanks, in part, to encouragement from LSC Director of Vocal Division and Choral Activities Dr. Paulo Gomes, who taught her how to be proactive, and mentorship from outgoing Undergraduate SGA President Maximiliano Perez.  This year, she served as the Marketing and Public Relations Chair for Undergraduate SGA.

Osorto’s aspirations for her upcoming term are grounded in one basic premise: “There's so many things we can do to help students feel more included.”

This approach spans from outreach to small student organizations to efforts to establish traditions that make the entire campus feel more welcoming.  Also under consideration are thoughtful changes in the way SGA operates such as adjusting meeting times to be more accessible to those balancing responsibilities such as a job or childcare.

For graduate SGA president-elect Zamaiah Robertson, the decision to return to UHD for a master’s degree was easy. “I know UHD is like home to me like no matter where I am in life.”

While initially here pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Robertson threw herself into campus life and very intentionally sought out community. Now as a graduate student, she recognizes there’s opportunity to build bridges for other students. To this end, she’ll be focusing her efforts on SGA around her Four Core Graduate Commitments:

  • To actively seek out input from graduate students, particularly on what their experiences at UHD are like, negative, positive, or complicated
  • To set up a monthly campaign that boosts university resources and upcoming events
  • To open up more career and professional development opportunities specifically tailored for graduate students
  • To cultivate a sense of social belonging and mental wellness support among graduate students.

Robertson, a Gator Success Institute Ambassador, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member, and outgoing Graduate SGA Event Coordinator, is well positioned to lead the charge of strengthening the sense of community among her fellow students.  She credits Tremaine Kwasikpui, Director of Student Leadership & Involvement; Dr. Kira Gatewood, Assistant Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students; Dr. Jason Holiday, Associate Director of Gator Success Institute Learning Success; and current GPSA Vice President Ralph Bradley for supporting her academic and leadership journey thus far.

We’re excited to see how Osorto’s and Robertson’s goals will manifest. In the meantime, we’d be remiss to not acknowledge the efforts of the outgoing SGA officers: It has been a privilege to witness your work in helping make UHD the welcoming community that it is today!
