This article is the third in a series about UHD’s student-centered professional organizations, ranging from smaller groups founded on campus to collegiate chapters of national organizations. Across all four academic colleges, these organizations offer students opportunities for professional development, community service, advocacy, academic enrichment, and more.
As President Melanie Fernandez Cordova said, UHD’s Bilingual Education Student Organization
(BESO) “stands out because it emphasizes service, leadership, and academic success
all at the same time, so members are constantly encouraged to improve themselves while
also giving back to the community.” Cordova is especially proud of how BESO supports
Gator students through academic support and social events.
“Building a strong connection with our students matters greatly,” Faculty Co-Advisor
Dr. Elizabeth Stackhouse said. “When students leave UHD to become teachers, developing
and strengthening their support network helps ensure their success and longevity in
the classroom. Most importantly, supporting our BESO students also means helping to
inspire the next generation of teachers in bilingual education.” Sisters Daisy and
Elsy Flores, who previously served as BESO’s president and vice president, expressed
pride in the sense of community that BESO cultivates.
“For me,” Daisy said,“ BESO will always be more than just an organization. It’s a
community that stays with you.”
