On Thursday, March 5, the Department of Mathematics & Statistics will be hosting their annual All Things Pi event in celebration of Pi Day. Pi Day formally falls on March 14, while students are out on Spring Break, so the department is throwing an early celebration.  

All Things Pi aims to bring awareness to students of the historical wonders of pi in the math and science realms. According to Len Berggren, Jonathan Borwein and Peter Borwein, authors of Pi: A Source Book, “The computation of pi is virtually the only topic from the most ancient stratum of mathematics that is still of serious interest to modern mathematical research.” 

The event takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in A300, which will be decked out with a display of facts, history, equivalence formulas, and quotes all involving pi. Attendees will get to partake in pi-related games, activities, and giveaways while interacting with Mathematics & Statistics faculty and the UHD Math Club. 

And, of course, there will be pie. This year, attendees get to choose between Apple, Blueberry, Texas Pecan Fudge, and Key Lime pies from the great Houston institution House of Pies and pick up a few other sweet treats.
