In her letter in the inaugural UHD magazine dedicated to faculty excellence, Bayou Scholars, Provost Bordelon writes: “A useful question to ask about any print publication is, simply: Why? As in, why should it exist?”  The answer is an easy one: UHD faculty excel in the areas of research, teaching, and service, and this very first issue of Bayou Scholars attempts to highlight as much of their extraordinary work as possible.

Take a look for yourself and discover how faculty research and community engagement are directly linked to student success—from the Houston Court Watch Program (led by Drs. Fei Yang, Kristen Anderson, Liza Barros-Lane, and Clete Snell) and sustainable urban living research (Drs. Lisa Morano and Vassilios Tzouanas) to UHD’s VITA Program (Drs. Arpita Shroff and Hanife Topal).

Bayou Scholars also includes some of the faculty’s most recent publications and insightful letters from the dean of each college, as well as research made possible by major federal grants, internal grants through the Organized Research and Creative Activity program, and Funded Faculty Leave.

Not only does this first issue cover many more topics than what is mentioned above, there is also so much more to come in future issues of the annual Bayou Scholars. Keeping up with the exceptional output of UHD faculty is no easy task, but the impact of their endeavors is self-evident: UHD students thrive because of the tireless pursuit of excellence by their professors.
