Mariachi music has long been a symbol of celebration and identity. At UHD, the tradition is now gaining renewed momentum as a structured academic program led by a director determined to build something lasting.
For David Moreno Quijano, the opportunity to lead UHD Mariachi Ensemble represents both a professional milestone and a cultural responsibility. “Mariachi is more than entertainment,” Moreno said. “It’s a tradition that carries history, discipline, and pride. My goal is to build a program that embraces tradition while representing UHD to its fullest.”
Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, and raised in South Texas, Moreno later refined his craft at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, home to one of the nation’s most respected collegiate mariachi programs. Today, he brings that experience to the heart of downtown Houston as director and instructor of the UHD Mariachi Ensemble.
“It’s exciting to start something almost from zero. We’re growing little by little, and the goal is to build a full ensemble that represents UHD,” Moreno said. The group has grown to six students so far and continues to welcome experienced musicians while seeking instrument donations to support the program’s expansion.
At UHD, mariachi previously existed as a student-led club supported through Student Affairs, organized by José Vásquez, Associate Director of Student Leadership and Involvement, who helped establish the program’s early roots. Now, Moreno and the ensemble are entering an exciting new phase as part of the university’s music curriculum.
