When Norberto Salazar joined UHD nearly two years ago, he brought more than just professional experience: He brought heart. Today, as the Career Coach and Liaison to Unique Cohort Groups for UHD’s Career Center, Norberto has already made a lasting impact on the UHD community, earning him the title of 2024 Rookie of the Year.
Originally from Dilley, Texas, Salazar found his way to Houston after COVID, following several years working in outreach, recruitment, and recreational sports at Northwest Vista College. His move was motivated by both love and purpose: He relocated to Rosenberg after getting married.
Norberto’s passion for mentorship became clear during his time in recreational sports. “I had a conversation with a few students about life, goals, and careers, and it hit me. That’s what I want to do,” said Salazar. That moment sparked a shift in his career path, eventually leading him to UHD.
Salazar is known for his approachable spirit and tireless dedication to students from all walks of life. Whether guiding alumni through job transitions or supporting non-traditional students facing unique challenges, he meets every individual with empathy and a commitment to their growth.
“I just try to be someone they can count on,” Salazar shared. “Sometimes students just need someone to say, ‘I see you; I believe in you.’”
When asked what advice he would give to someone just starting their career at UHD, Salazar emphasized the value of growth through discomfort. “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable, because that’s where growth happens,” he said. He also encouraged new professionals to connect with others and stay open to learning from every interaction. “Everyone here has something to offer,” he added. “The more you lean into relationships and new experiences, the more you’ll grow.”
From hosting career workshops to providing one-on-one coaching, Norberto continues to make UHD a place where students and alumni alike feel empowered and prepared for what’s next.
