Liz Tran’s story proves that nothing happens by accident. While enrolled at Houston Community College, Tran, an Alief ISD grad, joined the Advising and Counseling Department as a student worker. Tran recalls working alongside an Academic Advisor and seeing how they mentored and guided students like herself. It was during this time that Tran realized she wanted to pursue the same path. After obtaining her associate’s degree, Tran enrolled at UHD where she would complete her BBA in Management and, ultimately, find her career home.

“UHD is such a great opportunity,” Tran said, “especially for someone who is first-generation and an immigrant like me. Without UHD, I wouldn’t be the same person I am today.”

In 2013, Tran returned to UHD’s Marilyn Davies College of Business, but as a staff member, first as an Academic Advisor, then a Recruiter and Advisor for the college's MBA program, and now as an Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies. Although her role has transitioned since she first joined the team, Tran is still doing what she loves—advising, assisting, and guiding students. “UHD really represents the lower income and underrepresented population. I’m an immigrant myself and I can truly relate to the student’s journey. It’s not just my academic journey, but my professional journey.”

“It’s truly a blessing. I’m grateful for every part of it.”

When Tran isn’t working alongside her “dream team” in the MDCOB Dean Suite, don’t expect to catch her snoozing. Tran describes herself as “very active” and loves practicing yoga, traveling, and belting out tunes at karaoke.

More than anything, the UHD staff member genuinely enjoys her role at the university and considers UHD her home. “Working in higher education and student services is truly my passion.”
