You double and triple checked your resume for errors, ironed your button-down or blouse, and rehearsed your elevator pitch...now what? It’s time to meet Houston’s top employers at the Marilyn Davies College of Business (MDCOB) All Business Majors Internship and Career Fair from noon-3 p.m., Friday, September 27, 2024.
From international companies like Cemex to higher education institutions such as Lone Star Community College, you’ll have an opportunity to meet recruiters, human resources professionals, and hiring managers. In other words, you don't want to miss this in-person event at UHD’s One Main Building, Room A300.
If you are unable to make the in-person event, Gators have an opportunity to attend the Davies “Virtual” Internship and Career Fair on October 1, 2024. Read more details about the online event by clicking here.
And if you are looking to stand out amongst the crowd, Brett Hobby, Director of MDCOB’s Business Career Center, has three tips for a successful career fair:
1. Research Employers...and the positions they’re offering
“Make a Top 10 list (or make several as this will allow you to make better use of your time). If there is a long line at one of your "top" employers, go to another booth first,” says Hobby. Students may log into their Gatorhired account and navigate to the event under the "Events" tab. Click here to get started.
2. Prepare Your Elevator Pitch
After you’ve researched employers, you are ready to craft your elevator pitch. As a rule of thumb, you want to keep it brief (30 seconds), professional, and unique to you. Your elevator pitch should answer three questions: Who are you? What do you do? What position are you looking for? Once you’ve crafted the perfect elevator pitch, set aside time to practice it aloud. When delivering your pitch, remember to smile, keep eye contact with the listener, and deliver your speech in a upbeat and confident manner.
3. Dress Professionally
Don’t underestimate the power of professional dress. Do you have a suit jacket or blazer hanging in your closet? A career fair or interview is the perfect time to show it off. If you don’t have access to a suit or professional dress, the best bet is to opt for conservative business casual attire (i.e. nice pants, dresses, and closed toe shoes). Make sure your clothes are lint and wrinkle free, in good condition, and tailored. Finally, keep your hair groomed, and if you wear makeup, keep it natural.
