Chemical Inventory
The University of Houston–Downtown (UHD) must maintain a Workplace Chemical List (WCL) for hazardous chemicals normally present in quantities greater than 55 gallons or 500 pounds, as required by the Texas Hazard Communication Act (Section 502.002). This list is developed for each workplace where such chemicals are used or stored and is available for review by employees and their designated representatives.
- By December 31 each year, every UHD workplace or temporary workplace shall compile its WCL of hazardous chemicals present in those locations.
- By January 31, copies of these lists must be submitted to the UHD Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Office.
- By November 30, the EHS Office will distribute updated forms and instructions for departments to complete their WCL.
Employees will be informed about the WCL during General Hazard Communication Training. Departments are responsible for making the WCL readily accessible to employees and their representatives. Copies are also available from the EHS Office.
Each workplace supervisor must review and update their area-specific WCL at least annually (by January 31) or whenever significant changes occur.
Further details on each chemical can be found in its Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which must be available in every workplace where hazardous chemicals are used or stored.
Principal Investigators (PIs) and Shop Supervisors are required to prepare or update
a chemical inventory for each laboratory or shop annually. To comply with Hazard Communication
(HAZCOM) and NFPA standards, all labs and shops must keep an updated inventory on
file and provide it to EHS upon request.
For each hazardous substance, include:
- CAS number
- Chemical name
- Location in the lab/shop
- Quantity
- Receipt Date
- Expiration date for time-sensitive materials
- SDS hazard statement
- The specific information on any associated health or safety hazards must be readily available to all Laboratory or Shop Personnel.
This information ensures that all associated health and safety hazards are readily available to laboratory or shop personnel.
Follow the UHD Microsoft Excel inventory template and submit via email to ehs@uhd.edu. Paper copies will not be accepted.
