Service learning and community engagement at their finest: Dr. Visahkha Shembekar’s Organic Class students recently interacted with 200 students at St. Thomas High School, an all-boys Catholic college preparatory school near downtown Houston, regarding a topic that could save their lives.

Dr. Shembekar’s students evaluated the chemistry and effects on the body of commonly used/abused street drugs and presented their findings to the high school students, receiving an overwhelming response.

“It was very rewarding to see all these high schoolers interacting with our students during the oral and poster presentations,” said Shembekar. “Information was also shared in the form of brochures prepared by UHD students.”

This project was made possible in part by UHD’s Office of Impact Learning.
