Job Summary
The Telecommunications Specialist II coordinates, installs, maintains and supports the University's physical network structured cabling and fiber optic infrastructure, including, but not limited to, voice, data, audio, and video services.
Duties
- Installs and repairs the physical layer of UHD's network infrastructure both copper and fiber optic. Installs WAP's, routers, and switches; runs and relocates network cables to their desired location as requested.
- Coordinates cabling installations with service providers and contractors. Review construction drawings and provide feedback as required
- Coordinates and supports other IT groups and departments regarding network infrastructure tasks and projects
- Troubleshoots and repairs network cabling and fiber optics that are not working
- Assists department leadership with generating cabling related budget requests
- Researches and evaluates new cabling technologies and processes; makes suitable recommendations based on applicable codes, standards, and best practices

Qualifications
Required Education:
- Two (2) years of education beyond high school in college or technical school
Required Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of job-related experience
- Technical training in networks (cooper and fiber), experience installing network equipment and managing personnel on-jobsites
License/Certification
- Must maintain a valid, current driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- BICSI certification is preferred
- Fiber optics certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of IT copper and fiber cabling infrastructure
- Knowledge of networking (wired, wireless) and related components
- Knowledge of AV cabling
Skills:
- Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Abilities:
- Ability to install, test, and troubleshoot a variety of cable types, including copper, fiber, and coaxial type cables
- Ability to troubleshoot all networking issues (hardwire and wireless)
- Ability to install network racks and equipment
- Ability to identify damage to copper or fiber cabling, and repair using the appropriate tools
- Ability to create a job plan and scope of work.
Work Location and Physical Demands
Primary Work Location:
- Works in an office environment, technology server room, classroom, training room, auditorium, outdoor areas, library environment, gymnasium, or other physical training rooms.
Physical Demands:
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements
- Individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks.
- Work involves climbing, balancing, kneeling and use of ladders
- Work involves occasional exposure to elements, such as inclement weather, extreme temperatures, oil, and dust.
