Job Summary

The Circulation/Reference Librarian leads, coordinates, and supervises the Circulation department, overseeing all activities connected to providing access to the library collection, including the lending and return of library materials and course reserves.

Duties

  • Administers, develops, and reviews procedures related to lending and return of library materials and course reserves, and the maintenance of the physical collection.
  • Evaluates, selects, and implements new tools for the Circulation department.
  • Oversees and resolves billing, patron information, and customer service issues.
  • Manages and maintains the circulation component of the library services platform.
  • Provides reference research assistance to students, faculty, and other affiliated patrons; serves as a subject librarian and faculty liaison with duties including collection development through the selection and marketing of library resources.
  • Manages, trains, and supervises staff.
  • Manages and assesses library space for students and the physical collections; plans and oversees rearrangements of the collections.
  • Maintains statistics tracking the use of the physical collection.
  • Communicates with peers from other libraries within the system to establish common practices and to clarify local differences relating to borrowing privileges.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field from a University accredited by the American Library Association.

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of related job experience

License/Certification:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of operational procedures regarding Circulation and Access Services, and the related trends, issues, and accepted practices.

Skills:

  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office and Springshare;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community.

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements; individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks. May have occasional exposure to airborne particles. Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Must have the ability to move items of up to 35lbs.
