Job Summary

The Catalog Librarian manages the cataloging team, providing leadership, guidance, and expertise in original and copy cataloging for the library's physical, electronic, and digital collections.

Duties

  • Hires, trains, and evaluates the work of the staff who handle copy cataloging for books, serials, and non-print formats, and who batch catalog electronic resources.
  • Performs original and complex cataloging for publications in all formats, including foreign language works and digitized documents, from the library's digital repositories.
  • Leads the planning, implementation, and evaluation of cataloging operations and workflows to expedite the efficient processing of library materials.
  • Remains current with changes to cataloging standards and rules and advises the Assistant Director on goals and objectives.
  • Provides reference research assistance and instruction to students, faculty, and other affiliated patrons, and serves as a subject librarian and faculty liaison with duties including collection development.
  • Provides expert advice on how the library can effectively manage workflow; decides that tasks that can be effectively outsourced to external vendors.
  • Writes and maintains documentation; documents the library's local standards for customizing individual catalog records, outlining decisions for specific fields and scenarios, enabling vendors to update records according to the university's standards.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field from a University accredited by the American Library Association.

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of related job experience

License/Certification:

  • None

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in supervising and training a team is preferred;
  • Experience in writing documentation for complex workflow processes is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of cataloging practices, including knowledge of RDA, Library of Congress subject headings, and MARC21.

Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Word and SharePoint;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including good public speaking and teaching skills.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work with accuracy;
  • Ability to conduct research;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community.

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office and library environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements; individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks. Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Must have the ability to move items of up to 25lbs.
