UHD Competitive Scholarship Tuition Waiver Requirements

The University of Houston Downtown may charge a nonresident and international students who hold a Competitive Scholarship of at least $1,000 per term, for which the student is enrolled, resident tuition and fees without regard to the length of time the student has resided in Texas. The student must compete with other students, including Texas residents, for the scholarship and the scholarship must be awarded by a Scholarship Committee officially recognized by the UHD administration. Therefore, an application process must be in place as part of the scholarship criteria before a Competitive Scholarship tuition waiver can be granted.

Purpose:

To allow the granting of a waiver of nonresident tuition charges to individuals who receive a Competitive Scholarships totaling of at least $1,000 per term; scholarship recipient must have been in competition for scholarship opportunities, which were open all students, both residents and nonresidents (out-of-state and international.)

Eligibility Requirements:

Nonresident or International students must have competed with other students, including Texas residents, for the award. The student may receive a waiver of nonresident tuition for the period of time covered by the scholarship. College/Department must submit an application to the Office of Scholarships to request a Competitive Scholarship waiver for each eligible student and term of each waiver request. A scholarship application for the specified scholarship fund must be posted on the granting College/Division or Department’s scholarship webpage.

Per instructions from the Provost’s Office, each Competitive Scholarship fund must be approved by the General Scholarship Committee prior to the granting of a tuition waiver. The deadline for approving a Competitive Scholarship fund is at the first meeting of the General Scholarship Committee by October of each year. All Competitive Scholarship funds must be approved by the General Scholarship Committee by April each year for awards in the upcoming academic year.
