The Safety Management degree program at the University of Houston-Downtown is a unique program in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Technology. Students enrolled in the safety management program will be exposed to the human and equipment aspects of safety. Students will be trained in the ability to absorb new technologies generated from industry.

The degree program produces graduates that are able to apply the most modern technologies to assure the safety operation of current enterprises. It also produces graduates who are competent in communication and information presentation and have a sound foundation in safety management areas such as:

  • management of organizations
  • human factors
  • domestic terrorism
  • industrial safety
  • hygiene and loss prevention
  • risk management
  • security
  • environmental engineering and loss control

In addition, the degree program will prepare students for lucrative careers through smaller classes, faculty mentoring, modern labs, hands-on experience, and flexible class options.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Graduates who earn a BAAS in Safety Management will be able to:

  • Anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and develop control strategies for hazardous conditions and work practices.
  • Apply business and risk management concepts to prioritize resources and minimize risk.
  • Apply adult learning theory to develop and evaluate industrial training programs.
  • Identify and apply applicable standards, regulations, and codes in an industrial setting.
  • Conduct accident investigations and analysis.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Apply the Engineering Cannons to resolve issues of ethics and social responsibility.

DEGREE PLAN INFORMATION

The following four-year degree plan is based on the UHD 2016-2017 academic catalog. Students should meet with a UHD Academic Advisor to develop their own plan.

Note: The BAAS degree is intended for recipients of the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree awarded by the community or junior colleges. These programs extend for four or more semesters and include 60 semester credit hours.

ADMISSIONS AND DECLARATION OF MAJOR

Students may be admitted to and declare a major in Applied Arts and Sciences in Safety Management if they meet the following criteria:

CAREERS

Graduates may become managers or co-managers of existing safety programs, or develop programs in small companies. Opportunities also exist in the commercial, industrial and public service sectors. The safety management curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers such as:

  • Safety Specialist
  • Safety Inspector
  • Compliance Officer
  • Safety Manager
  • Safety Director
  • Safety Administrator

SUGGESTED MINORS

  • Bioinformatics
  • Computer Science 20 hours minimum
  • Engineering Technology 20 hours minimum
