This course, ACC 4390, is rooted in the esteemed Becker CPA Examination online curriculum, enhanced with the invaluable insights and teachings of UHD professors who have themselves successfully passed the CPA Exam.

How to Get Started
Who Can Apply?

This course is specifically designed for undergraduate and graduate accounting majors at the University of Houston – Downtown who are aiming to take the CPA Exam immediately after completing the course or shortly thereafter. It is open to current UHD students as well as UHD alumni. Graduate students are typically eligible to enroll. Undergraduate students should be in their final semester prior to graduation to qualify for this opportunity. Students who successfully complete the Becker CPA Exam Review and achieve the "exam ready" status stand a significantly high chance of passing the CPA exam section they have prepared for. What Is The Class Modality?

Designed for flexibility, the course is delivered in an asynchronous format allowing students to learn at their own pace. Additionally, students will benefit from extra guidance and expertise provided by UHD professors who have personally conquered the CPA Exam. The course materials will consist of Becker CPA Examination Preparedness materials which are 100% online, supplemented by assignments from professors.

What Are The Costs?

The financial investment for this class includes the standard tuition and fees associated with a typical 3 hour UHD course, plus the cost for the Becker CPA Exam Review, estimated at approximately $1,500. See Tuition and Mandatory Fees in the Cashier's Department

Student will be required to purchase the Becker CPA Exam Review course materials which cost approximately $1500 when purchased through the university. While students will only be required to prepare for one section of the CPA exam during the class, the software purchased by the students will allow them access to all four sections of the exam required by the State of Texas for a period of up to two years.

 

How Do We Register?

The class for students is ACC 4390. The registration process is the normal UHD registration process for classes. Fall registration is currently open, register today!

Taking the CPA Exam & Course Requirements
What Is My Commitment To Pass CPA Examination?

Passing the CPA examination is a major commitment of time, effort, and money. Becker estimates the following study hours are required to be “pass ready for each CORE section of the CPA examination: 

Test Sections Assumed Foundation Preparation Hours Required to Be Exam Ready
 Audit (AUD)   Auditing and advanced auditing classes    80 - 100 hours 
 Financial (FAR)   Intermediate and advanced accounting classes   130 - 150 hours 
 Regulatory   Federal taxation and business law   100 - 120 hours

The same effort should be assumed for the three Discipline sections of the CPA Examination. Remember, you must pass all three of the Core sections of the examination plus one of the three Discipline sections.  

What Are The Requirements To Take The CPA Examination? And To Take The Class?

The State of Texas has recently revised their requirements to take the CPA Exam, allowing students who are in progress towards their degree to commence taking the exam earlier than before.

To sit for the CPA Exam in Texas, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Submit an Application of Intent to the Texas state Board of Public Accountancy. Complete fingerprint and background check with the Texas Department of Public Safety and FBI.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 120 semester hours (180 quarter hours) of college credits.
  • A minimum of 21 semester hours (31.5 quarter hours) in upper-level accounting courses. including two semester hours of accounting or tax research and analysis.

A minimum of 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in upper-level business courses, including two hours of accounting or business communication. To take this class, you must demonstrate you will qualify to take the CPA Exam by the end of the class or within several months of completion.
