Official Seal
Steeped in Texas tradition, the Seal of the University of Houston System is the Official Seal of Arms of General Sam Houston, as handed down to him from noble ancestors. The simple Escutcheon in the center of the seal consists of checkered chevrons denoting nobility, and three Martlets, gentle Lowland birds symbolizing peace and deliverance. A winged hourglass is above the shield, surmounting this, the motto, “In Tempore" (In Time). Greyhounds were placed at the sides to indicate the speed in giving aid.
Colors
Our primary school colors are UHD Blue and UHD Red.

Alma Mater
Standing proud along the Bayou,
A Houston landmark true,
Is our noble Alma Mater,
Glorious to view.
Representing many cultures,
Races, tongues, and creeds,
Confident we now go forth to
Serve our common needs.
Studies finished, now we're leaving
New goals to pursue,
But our hearts to University of Houston-Downtown
Ever will be true.
Come, let's join and raise our voices,
Praising UHD.
Thy dear memory!
UHD Campus Traditions
Week of Welcome
Week of Welcome, held during the first week of classes each fall and spring semesters,
celebrates the beginning of the semester with a comprehensive calendar of events and
activities designed to welcome back new and continuing Gators.
Homecoming
Homecoming, held annually during the fall semester, is a time for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community to come together, and celebrate the spirit and pride of UHD. Current, former, and future Gators unite to celebrate the common thread that binds all Gators. The key features of Homecoming are the UHD Pep Rally, the Homecoming games, and Tail-Gatoring.
Student Involvement Day, held during the fall and spring semesters, is a resource and tabling fair that highlights student organizations, Greek life, and Campus Activities Board (CAB), Student Government Association (SGA), and invites all students to find a place and engage.
Bayou Bash
Bayou Bash, held each spring, is a cultural celebration with crawfish, drinks, and zydeco music to celebrate the richness of UHD. Clubs and organizations registered with the university use this time to fundraise and celebrate their organizations.
GatorServe
GatorServe, held each fall and spring semester on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and September 11th, respectively, are both regarded as National Days of Service. UHD students, staff, faculty, friends, families, and community partners join to complete projects in service of our neighbors.
The University of Houston-Downtown Class Ring
Many University of Houston-Downtown traditions reside in the hearts of students and alumni, but the UHD class ring is the only tradition that is always with you. The ring is presented each semester at a formal ring ceremony. Tradition dictates that current students must wear the ring facing inward, with only alumni wearing the ring facing outward. Current students and alumni can find information on the UHD Class Ring site.
Ed-U-Gator
The Gator is the official mascot for the University of Houston-Downtown. The official name for the mascot is Ed-U-Gator. You will find the mascot promoting team spirit cheering on club sports, at local community activities, and at university events promoting Gator Pride!
