Following spring 2024 elections, the current slate of officers for UHD’s Student Government Association (SGA) began their term on June 1. They are:

  • Nicholas J. Lockett, President
  • Maximilliano Perez, Vice President
  • Iker Pelcastre, Secretary
  • Miguel Herrera, Treasurer
  • Ignacio Lopez, COB Senator
  • Nidhi Chavan, CST Senator
  • Alexis Beltran, CHSS Senator
  • Emily Martinez, CPS Senator

SGA President Nick Lockett shared that the focus of this 45th administration is to

  1. Increase student engagement on campus.
  2. Increase mental health awareness on campus.
  3. Repurpose unused spaces into student success centers.

Over the summer, the officers met to discuss, plan, and begin implementing SGA initiatives. Recognizing the importance of voter registration and the upcoming presidential elections, they zeroed in on two, big fall events: Constitution Day with SGA and Walk2Vote.

“All federally funded institutions are required to recognize Constitution Day,” said Lockett. “On September 17, 1787, 13 states gathered in Philadelphia to agree simultaneously to adopt the constitution, a living document that outlines our establishment as an independent and free nation. At our event, we will celebrate democracy, citizenship, and freedom by having guest speakers educate students on the importance of voting as well as food, music, and prizes.”

Constitution Day with SGA kicks off at 11 a.m. in A-300 with a series of speakers, followed by food and games at the Mural Area and South Deck from Noon-5 p.m.

Next up? Walk2Vote on Monday, Oct. 21, the first day of early voting in Harris County.

After that? It’s time for everyone to exercise the privilege of voting in the presidential elections. There are three different ways to vote:

  • Mail Ballot: The deadline to apply is Friday, Oct. 25.
  • Early Voting: Centers will be open from Monday, Oct. 21– Friday, Nov. 1.
  • Election Day: Polls will be open 7 a.m.–7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
