Description of Internship
Assists in the coordination and support of Public Education Office communications
activities including writing and implementing campaigns and programs that increase
awareness of cancer and enhance the visibility of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center as
a vital community resource for cancer information and care.

Learning Objectives:
Enhances the institution’s image as a resource for innovative and informative educational programs and communications campaigns. Specific Duties Include: In collaboration with team members, the communications intern will:
- support development of communications tools
- serve on planning committees for educational programs/events
- staff education events (may include weeknight and weekend events)
- perform data entry into existing databases/mailing lists
- develop, implement, assist with assembly of educational materials/inventory system
- conduct research and draft papers on assigned topics
- support media relations activities
Salary
There is no salary for this internship; however, Texas Medical Center parking is paid in full.
Supervision
Direct supervision from the senior communications specialist and communications specialist.
Education
College level work towards bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related degree.
Equipment/Software
Requires the ability to use information technology for personal productivity. Must be able to operate standard office equipment such as computer, printer, calculator, fax machine, photocopier, etc. Requires functional proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). Proficiency in graphics/design software, such as InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop, is preferred, but not required.
Working Conditions
Work is performed at M. D. Anderson and various locations in the local community. Work performed primarily in an office environment and includes substantial computer-based work. Must be able to move about freely and independently throughout the office suite/building, between campus buildings and to off-site community locations. Some functions may require reaching-horizontally/vertically, pulling/ push and/or exerting force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 15 –20 pounds.
Requires ability to analyze and solve problems, make appropriate and independent judgments or triage to appropriate staff; synthesize complex information; and effectively coordinate and complete multiple tasks simultaneously. Must be able to read and demonstrate comprehension of technical or medical information and present ideas/information orally and in written form in a logical manner and sequence using appropriate grammar, language and style. Must be able to communicate tactfully/effectively with diverse constituents of the Public Education Office.
