Organization Description

For 117 years, DePelchin has been serving the children and families of the Houston area.  The agency was founded in 1892 by Kezia Payne DePelchin to shelter orphaned children. It was originally named the Faith Home, because Mrs. DePelchin had faith in the wonderful business leaders of Houston to support her cause. Although she died within a year, the community leaders, touched by her passion and mission, became united in their determination to carry on her work.

Over the years, DePelchin has expanded and adapted its programs to meet the needs of a dynamic and growing Houston. Today, services are provided in over 60 locations in Harris, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Ft. Bend and Waller counties.

DePelchin Children's Center serves over 23,000 children and family members annually through 30 dynamic programs like adoption, foster care, counseling, and much more.

Adult Assessment and Children's Assessment Clinical Teams

Our teams of multi-disciplinary clinical staff at The Children's Crisis Care Center are experts in working with abusive and neglectful families and maltreated children. This experience and expertise supports.

The Center's philosophy that early assessment and intervention increases the likelihood of a healing future for the traumatized child. Comprehensive early evaluations of families and all physically abused and neglected children (within 30 days of CPS placement).

4C's reports and recommendations are then used to assist in the planning for care of the child, and target the services to reduce the risk in the family

Description of Internship

DePelchin Children’s Center will provide interns with an array of opportunities working with comprehensive social services to families in various communities. Each intern receives weekly supervision.  This will occur in the form of 100% individual interaction. 

DePelchin Children’s Center Residential Treatment Center’s are involved in various community based and rehabilitative programs for clients.  All services are designed to strengthen the family unit. Each program or program location offers unique services.  Every effort will be made to have experiences in development, not-for-profit, mental health, social services, and community /program building.  The intern will help bring enrichment to kids in our residential treatment facility, building community awareness, and assist in event planning.


Each student will receive an orientation to the program and the agency.  At this time the supervisor and student will assess strengths, learning goals, areas of challenges, and program/agency information.  An education plan will be developed within the first week of the internship.  The plan will consist of individual goals and objectives based on the student’s area of study and individual experiences


  • Assist staff by being a positive support during activities. (By verbal encouragement to participate).
  • Assist with set up of any activity.
  • Shadow staff by observing how the groups are executed.
  • When interning with the therapist, the therapist will give assigned duties.
  • Assist staff when they ask for support, but can not give any discipline.
  • When in classroom, interns can assist those children that may need help in their studies
  • When arriving always inform the Supervisor of your presence.
  • Support other members of the team in carrying out organizational goals and activities.
  • Ability to work well with others/staff (teamwork)
  • Able to work with a lot of distracting noise
  • Able to work in an environment that does not allow for privacy
  • Ability to communicate with staff what their needs are
  • Initiative in work being done
  • Always check with Supervisors when not sure
  • Do not show favoritism
  • Do not be left alone with the children
  • Prompt in attendance
  • Confidentiality
  • Do not pre-judge with out the whole story
  • Communicate all concerns and issues with Supervisors
  • All other Duties assigned.
