Dr. Jose E. Alvarez received his Ph.D. in History in 1995 from The Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida and began teaching at the University of Houston-Downtown in 1996. Prior to coming to UHD, in Florida, he taught at Miami-Dade Community College-Downtown Campus, The Florida State University, Keiser University, and Tallahassee Community College. At UHD, he primarily teaches non-US history courses and his area of research/interest is the Spanish military, especially the Spanish Foreign Legion in the first half of the 20th century.

Dr. Álvarez holds a Ph.D. in History from The Florida State University. Dr. Alvarez is well qualified to teach lower level as well as upper-level history courses.

Prior to 1996, he taught at: The Florida State University (Middle East [UL] and World History surveys), Tallahassee Community College (World History surveys), and Keiser University (US History surveys).

José E. Alvarez is a military historian whose research focuses on the elite military units of the Spanish Army in the 20th century (i.e., the Spanish Foreign Legion and the Regulares). He is the author of The Betrothed of Death: The Spanish Foreign Legion During the Rif Rebellion, 1920-1927 (Greenwood Press, 2001), which was selected as a History Book Club selection for 2001. He has made numerous presentations at the Society for Military History's annual meetings as well as at those of the Missouri Valley History Conference.
