Biography
Dr. Lund has published numerous essays and book chapters that explore the medical rhetoric underpinning the discourses of race and social hygiene in colonial and post-colonial literature and film, as well as the government policies and social realities they reflect and shape. Dr. Lund's interdisciplinary degrees and publications contribute directly to her pedagogy. Her background in cultural criticism, her knowledge of various Western and non-Western literary traditions, and her fluency in several languages, make her particularly suitable to teach courses in world literature and postcolonial studies where it is crucial to place texts in their political, artistic, and linguistic contexts.

Dr. Giuliana Lund is an Associate Professor of English. She completed a doctorate in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, along with a Certificate in African Studies, with an emphasis on the Anglophone and Francophone literatures of Europe and Africa. Her dissertation, "Doctoring the Empire," focused on the representation of Africa as a site of plague in English and French colonial literature, and the response to this medicalization of Africa in post-colonial Anglophone and Francophone writings. She has published numerous essays and book chapters that explore the medical rhetoric underpinning the discourses of race and social hygiene in colonial and post-colonial literature and film, as well as the government policies and social realities they reflect and shape. Dr. Lund's interdisciplinary degrees and publications contribute directly to her pedagogy. Her background in cultural criticism, her knowledge of various Western and non-Western literary traditions, and her fluency in several languages, make her particularly suitable to teach courses in world literature and postcolonial studies where it is crucial to place texts in their political, artistic, and linguistic contexts. Given her background in literary and science studies, she is also well prepared to teach courses in science fiction. Dr. Lund has taught writing, literary interpretation, and cultural criticism full time since 1997, first in the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program, the Honors College, and the English Department at Arizona State University, before coming to UHD in 2006. In addition, she has actively encouraged student research by regularly chairing or co-chairing UHD's annual student gender studies conference, by encouraging her own students to participate in this and other conferences.
