Biography

Since 2008, Dr. Colón has been a Lecturer in Political Science, Department of Social Sciences, at the University of Houston-Downtown. In addition to teaching at UHD, Dr. Colón has his own legal practice, where his emphasis is in public finance and all forms of commercial transactions, corporations, partnerships, commercial lending, mergers and acquisitions, contract drafting and negotiation, and other related corporate and business matters. Dr. Colón graduated from the University of Houston with a B.B.A. in Economics (cum laude) in 1980, received his M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Houston in 1984 and a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 1984. Dr. Colón then obtained a LL.M. in Banking Law in 1986 from Boston University School of Law. In 2000, he received a Masters Degree and in 2003 a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Houston. Mr. Colón is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas. He is fluent in Spanish.

Experience Qualifications

Edgardo Colón has a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Houston. His dissertation involved a study of judicial independence in Latin America, from the standpoint of the constitutional design of the judicial branch, with particular emphasis on Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico and Venezuela. As a practicing attorney for almost 30 years, Dr. Colón is well qualified to teach upper-level political science courses such as American Legal System, Introduction to American Constitutional Law and US Civil Liberties.

Teaching Experience:

•2008 - present: Lecturer in Political Science in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown, where he teaches Federal Government, American Legal System, Introduction to American Constitutional Law, US Civil Liberties and Hispanic Politics.

Professional Experience:

•EDGARDO E. COLON, P.C. (2003-present). Law practice with emphasis in contracts and other commercial transactions, public finance, and corporations.

•Bechtel Corporation (1996-2003). Senior Counsel. Legal counsel to a global engineering and construction organization that provides technical, management and related services to develop, manage, engineer, build and operate installations for customers worldwide.

•Bank United of Texas FSB (1991-95). Assistant General Counsel. Emphasis in commercial lending, real estate and secured transactions.

•Sheinfeld, Maley & Kay (1990-91). Associate in the Commercial Lending/Real Estate Section with emphasis in commercial lending, real estate and secured transactions, and general corporate matters.

•Fulbright & Jaworski (1986-1989). Associate in the Corporate Section with emphasis in commercial lending and secured transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate matters.

More Information

Dr. Colón's his research interest is the judicial systems of Latin American countries.

Since 2008, Dr. Colón has served as the Chairman of the Board of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation. The Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation operates and develops various public facilities at NRG Park, including NRG Stadium, NRG Center, NRG Arena and NRG Astrodome. As Chairman of the Board, he sits on the board of the Houston Super Bowl LI Host Committee (to be held at NRG Stadium in 2017), and sat on the boards of the World Cup Bid Committee, the Houston Racing Association (Grand Prix), and the Houston 2011 Summer National Seniors Games.

In addition, Dr. Colón served a two-year term as Chairman of the Board of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. During his Chairmanship of this important organization, he led the efforts to develop a 10-year Strategic Plan, saw the Chamber ranked as number six in the region (improvement from 25th the previous year) and emphasized and promoted procurement opportunities for Hispanic-owned businesses, appointment of Hispanics to corporate boards and international trade with Latin America. He has also served as the President of the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston.
