Dr. Hughes has 15 years teaching experience and has taught over 13 different courses within the discipline of Political Science. She has also served as a research associate for the Hobby Center of Public Policy (2000-2006), working on two separate grants with a combined value of $1.8 million. She also served as the principal investigator on an evaluation of Learning Signature for Cy Fair Community College.

Dr. Hughes has a Ph.D. in Political Science. Her dissertation, "Reducing the Effects of Low Social Capital in Education…" was study of the role of social capital in higher educational attainment and a look into the success of specific school programs in making up for low levels of social capital among their students.
