Biography

Bridget Mueller was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Fall 2023. She was recognized as the 2017 University of Houston-Downtown Lecturer of the Year. Professor Mueller began teaching at UHD in 2001 as an Adjunct Professor, promoting to the Lecturer position in 2012. She has taught at Houston Baptist University, University of Houston, and Wharton County Junior College. She recently served the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence as a Faculty Fellow and was a past Faculty Champion for the A+CE (Academic Achievement through Community Engagement) program at UHD. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board granted Professor Mueller with a $20K grant in 2020 to bring Open Education Resources into her online course environment. She continues to work with the THECB giving regular presentations at conventions and conferences. In Fall 2017, she was awarded with a Course Innovation Initiative Grant. She is the Course Coordinator for COMM 1304. Her area of research is in Corporate Communication, focusing on superior/subordinate relations, employee motivation, interviewing, and presentation skills. She has published articles in the Journal of Business Communication and has presented seminars to the Society of Petroleum Engineers Emerging Leaders, Houston chapter and Halliburton. Bridget's professional experience includes marketing in the oil industry and fund development for the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast.

Experience Qualifications

Ms. Bridget Mueller is a Lecturer of Communication at the University of Houston-Downtown. She has over twenty years of collegiate teaching experience, teaching at four Universities and colleges in the Houston area. She received her Master of Arts in Speech Communication from the University of Houston in May 2000, focusing her coursework on Organizational Communication and her research on the Leader-Member Exchange Theory and Communication Satisfaction in Non-Profit Organizations. From her professional experience, she has gained enormous experience in public speaking and continually applies that experience in the classroom setting. She is currently the Course Coordinator for COMM 1304, a core course and the building block course for the Communication Area of Concentration. In this role, she manages the common syllabus, course updates, text selection, assignment and testing development, and assessment. She is actively engaged in the assessment process within the Communication team.

Professional Experience:
Bridget Mueller has vast career experience in both the collegiate and business segments. She has held management development positions in marketing for the oil industry as well as fund development. Academic staffing positions include experience in academic advising and admissions departments at University of Houston (main campus) and Houston Baptist University. As a fund development manager for the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, Bridget Mueller engaged audiences of 2-1000 on numerous occasions, giving well over 500 presentations.

Academic Scholarship/Research:
Bridget Mueller's main research focus has been on the Leader-Member Exchange Theory, specifically addressing application of the theory to the non-profit business sector in Houston, Texas. She was awarded a $500 grant from the Shell Foundation for her research. Bridget has published articles in the Journal of Business Communication and The Way Ahead: Young Engineer's Professional Publication. She has presented at several professional conferences including the National Association of Broadcasting Annual Convention, the National Communication Association Annual Convention, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the Rice University Facilities Department Annual Leadership Retreat.
