The mission of the UHD Safe Zone Program is to empower faculty and staff to build a more inclusive, equitable, and welcoming campus environment for all members of the UHD community, and particularly for LGBTQ persons who are members of the campus community. The Safe Zone Program provides training to faculty and staff who wish to become Safe Zone Team members willing both to make themselves available as listeners and advocates for LGBTQ persons, and to confront the ignorance of homophobia and heterosexism wherever on campus they are expressed. UHD has a responsibility as one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the United States to promote acceptance and celebration of all people, regardless of differences.
The specific goals of the UHD Safe Zone Program are three:
1) to provide support to LGBTQ students, faculty, staff and their allies;
2) to confront ignorance, hatred, and apathy related LGBTQ issues: and,
3) to provide a safe environment for those students, faculty, and staff who do not wish to remain “in the closet.”
