Job Summary

The University Archivist coordinates and manages an archival program wherein the physical and digital materials that document the activities and history of the university and its predecessor institutions are identified, collected, organized, preserved, and made available for use.

Duties

  • Acquires and processes physical and digital collection materials according to accepted archival standards and procedures
  • Works directly with individual departments to acquire official university records
  • Oversees conservation efforts and re-houses documents
  • Develops and maintains archives and special collections operating procedures, collaborating with library management to set procedures and policies involved in digitization and use of the collection
  • Prepares and maintains finding aids such as inventory and collection guides
  • Administers digital archives and special collections infrastructure; prepares repository and archival materials for digitization
  • Engages in outreach activities promoting the Library, University Archives, and Special Collections
  • Develops and maintains archives and special collections operating procedures
  • Provides reference assistance to interested parties regarding the University Archives, Special Collections materials, and UHD history

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Advanced/master's degree in History, Political Science, Library Science or related discipline

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of related job experience

License/Certification:

  • None required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience of processing institutional archives or manuscript collection preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of archival concepts, methodology, and techniques; familiarity with MARC, EAD, AACR2, and DACS

Skills:

  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Abilities:

  • Ability to organize resources and establish priorities;
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long term goals;
  • Ability to write manuals and establish workflows;
  • Ability to maintain and search online electronic retrieval systems;

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office environment

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements;
  • Individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks
