Job Summary

The Academic Advisor III advises students on academic programs, and works closely with students in an effort to help select, outline, and achieve educational and developmental goals.

Duties

  • Advises and assists students in mapping out their educational career and meeting their educational goals.
  • Advises new, transfer, and current students on academic matters such as course selection and degree declaration.
  • Creates official degree plans for declared students.
  • Processes and verifies graduation applications.
  • Participates in on and off campus recruitment and registration activities with Houston area community colleges and high schools.
  • Evaluates transcripts for incoming undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students.
  • Maintains continuous communication with students as necessary, via email, telephone, and in-person consultations to ensure accurate placement and schedule planning.
  • Manages, maintains, and audits student records; assists students with processing paperwork and other issues.
  • Processes and submits substitutions and waivers for students as necessary.
  • Evaluates transcripts and submits articulation requests as required.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of related job experience, including experience in using student database systems.

License/Certification:

  • None Required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree is preferred; minimum of five (5) years of related job experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the advising function in a higher education environment, and the related trends, issues, and best practices; knowledge of all courses offered and the requirements for specific degree plans, including co-requisites and pre-requisites; knowledge of TSI policies.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; good organizational and time management skills.

Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community.

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements; individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks. Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
